According to the rapid development of Chinese economy, the expansion of city scale and increasing number of motor vehicles, the number of signal lights is becoming larger and larger. As the single point of control is adopted in the intersections in our most cities, the vehicles on the road often move on or stop because of the frequent appearance of the red lights, which leads to the increase of traffic jam and delay as well as the increasing consumption of fuel and more serious environmental pollution. Because urban trunk road carries the main traffic volumes of a city, the traffic delay and the number of stops will be greatly reduced if the problem of coordinated control can be successfully resolved, resulting in low fuel consumption and environmental pollution. Arterial coordinated control model determines the effect of arterial coordinated control, indicating that research on arterial coordinated control model has important theoretical and practical value.Recently, arterial coordinated control models, both home and abroad, mainly apply two types of design ideas: one method is based on minimum delay and the other one is based on the maximum width of green band. Since the control effect of models based on delay usually cannot reach the desired effect, variable band speed arterial coordination control model takes the maximum width of green band as the design goal. However, the commonly used models based on the maximization of the width of green band widely have the following two problems: the design vehicle speed is unreasonable; only one coordinated phase is used to coordinate the vehicle flows from opposite directions. Fortunately, variable band speed arterial coordination control model solves the two above problems well.First, based on the study of the variable band speed arterial coordination control model, this article promotes the model into further development, especially the research on the circumstance that multiple intersections applying double-coordinated phase model simultaneously can greatly increase the width of green band. Take Hong Kong East Road in Qingdao as an example, on the basis of surveys and analyses of its traffic, we make scheme design separately using numeric method model and variable band speed arterial coordination control model. Comparing the width of green band of each scheme, the result shows that variable band speed arterial coordination control model can increase the width of arterial coordinated control system more effectively. Furthermore, this article proposes the specific solutions after the analysis of pedestrian's crossing the street, and deduces a model calculating delay of intersections under the arterial coordinated control according to the condition that models of effective calculation for the traffic delay under the arterial coordinated control has not yet formed. Finally, Synchro simulation software is used to simulate the scheme of point control, the scheme of numeric method model, the scheme of isolated-coordinated phase model and the scheme of double-coordinated phase model in three different times of the day. A comparative analysis of the simulation results of the above different schemes shows that variable band speed arterial coordination control model is superior to numeric method model when traffic saturation is within a certain range, that is, if variable band speed arterial coordination control model is adopted to coordinate the arterial road, the vehicle delay and the number of stops will decrease greatly and simultaneously, the fuel consumption and toxic gas emission will be reduced.The variable band speed arterial coordination control model is a simple one of arterial coordinated control models and the research results in this paper will contribute to popularization and application of it.
