With the development of the higher education in China, it is common for the colleges and universities to explore the new campuses or augment the campus size. In 2010, the Tianjin government and the educational department signed an agreement of building a new campus for Tianjin University, which located in the Haihe education zone, Jinnan District. Meanwhile, the fate of the old campus, that is how to renovate it, is related to the staff re-assignment, the sustainable use of the buildings, the heritages, the continuity of the culture and so on. All of the above are the origination of this study on the sustainable use of the old campus. On one hand, this study is going to provide valuable suggestions for the sustainable use of Qilitai campus; on the other hand, it calls the leaders to recollect the way of university development.The framework of this study is composed of four parts. Firstly, the history of Tianjin University has been studied to get a general context on campus evolvement. Secondly, the characteristics of the old campus are figured out in order to clarify the advantages and shortages in the development of the campus. The third part, based on the conclusion of the second part, the author suggests the strategy of how to design the new campus on considering inheriting the cultural context and solving the problem existed in the old campus. In the last part, the author studies the sustainable use of the old campus based on the concept of how to protect the old campus environment and cultural context, which specifically are the re-planning of the land use, reusing of the buildings and landscape, in order to give the old campus a new vivid life.In sum, with the study on the sustainable use of the old campus, the valuable suggestions on design and renovation are positive to the development of Tianjin University.
