With the fast development of LED industry and continuous advancement of LED technology, the trends that LED lighting will replace the traditional lighting sources are becoming more and more evident. The traditional optical design of LED lighting system is to measure the optical properties after the lamps are made out, if the product can't meet the requirements, we must use a lot of time and effort to redesign. In this paper, we use the optical simulation software named Tracepro to build a simplified model of LED chips, and we use this model to guide the design of LED lamps, so that we can improve the efficiency and save the costs.Firstly we conducted the reliability test of some LED chips and LED fluorescent lamps from 7 LED companies, which have high performance price ratio, and we briefly analyze the relationship between the operating current and lifetime of LED. We found that the curves of luminous flux decay meet the formula y=exp (-at), in which y means the relative light output, a means the attenuation coefficient and t means the lighting hour. If we can make sure that the current not exceed the maximum operating current and ensure the lighting effects, we can increase the current of LED chips properly and sacrifice part of the lifetime of LED to achieve the purpose of reducing the number of LED chips in one lamp and the lighting costs. We used Tracepro to build a simplified model of LED chips and compared the candela distribution curve of the model to the actual intensity distribution of the LED products, and we found that the two remained the same within the permissible error range. It is said that this model could reflect the true intensity distribution of LED chips, and it provides a good solution to help us simplify the design process of LED lamps. Through this model, we simulated and designed several LED lamps to replace the traditional lighting sources.
