IEC 61850 standard is based on a common network communication platform for the international standard substation automation system.Compared with other communication protocols such as IEC 103, IEC 61850 has object-oriented, distributed and hierarchical functions, flexible configuration and a series of advantages. At present, our country is fully committed to promoting and building smart substation.Smart substation is based on IEC 61850 standard, combined the trend of primary and secondary device integration, the primary device has been proposed smart,re-integration of substation information and advanced applications have been proposed. But, during the smart substation construction and transformation of the traditional substations, there are some non-mainstream devices using other communication protocols. This situation affects device and devices, devices and systems interoperability. To solve this problem, this paper presents the solution with a Bay-oriented IEC 61850 Gateway. IEC 61850 Gateway does seamless translation with other communication protocols and IEC 61850 standard. This solution will play an important role in the current and future period.Based on the IEC 61850 standard, the design specifications and engineering experiences of smart substations, the paper discusses the necessity of bay-oriented information collection and protocol conversion. The design and implementation methods of a bay-oriented IEC 61850 gateway are then illuminated. From the aspect of system design, the current practices of IEC 61850-based substations are considered, and the technologies such as visual configuration tool, the unified modeling and seamless communication are adopted, thus the goal of information sharing between substations and applications can be achieved. From the aspect of system implementation, the technologies of real-time database, soft-bus and software adaptors are used, so that the system can be integrated, extended, improved and maintained easily. The proposed scenario of the bay-oriented IEC 61850 gateway has practical value to the construction of the integrated information platforms for smart substations.
