In recent years, with the development of power electronic and the increasingly maturation of large-power AC motor variable frequency speed control technology, the ship electric propulsion technology shows its advantages in civil and military ship little by little and becomes the development trend of future ship power plant. The ship electric propulsion system has great breakthrough in mobility, reliability, efficiency and promote the power and other aspects. With the ship's electric propulsion technology applications constantly expanding, ship electric propulsion system has shown broad prospects. The electric propulsion ship has good performance in some aspects, such as maneuvering, handling, flexible layout, space saving, economy and security. So, the application field of electric propulsion technology has been expanding constantly. It is also widely used in conventional large and medium-sized ships except for icebreaker, the dredger, and exploration ship. This paper's main work is doing the practical research of the electric propulsion in the small vessels.First, the article introduced the present situation of the electric propulsion domestic and foreign, and then introduce the constituent of the electric propulsion. Then the article introduced the superiority of the electric propulsion by contrast the differences of the electric propulsion and the diesel propulsion. At last, the article introduced the operating characteristics and the hydrodynamic performance of the propeller on the electrical propulsion ship.The paper's main work is using CFD method to calculate the hydrodynamic performance of the electrical propulsion propeller. Firstly, establish the calculated model in GAMBIT using the nodes which got from FORTRAN. And then in FLUENT, adopt the mesh method to objectively simulate the working condition of the propeller at different position. Analysis the effect of the different position to the hydrodynamic performance of the propeller.In summary, the electric propulsion has many merits, so it can suit the application in the small ships. It's the trend of the propulsion in the future.
