Power system fault recorder is the foundation of modern network research and also the important basis on evaluation and analysis of relay protection equipment malfunction nature and causes. Excellent performance of fault record device plays a very important role to ensure safe operation of the power system and improve the power quality. As technology of smart grid and digital substation developing rapidly, digital distributed fault recorder becomes the research focus and developing direction of fault recorder. At first this paper researches related technology of digital substation and IEC61850 (the unique worldwide standard of communication in digital substation now), and then analysis the influence of them on fault recorder with working experience and existing theories of fault recorder, and reveal the advantages of distributed digital recorder. The developing of digital distributed recorders has two major parts:design of specific device and design of data analysis software. To the former, the core work is building a communication model conforming to IEC61850, and to the latter, is the analysis algorithm. Then, this paper researches and dissertates the modeling method, steps and demand in details, then gives a general scheme of modeling a digital distributed fault recorder and build the model conforming to IEC61850.At last. Fault location algorithm of fault data analysis technology is studied, a new fault location method for high voltage transmission lines based on radio based neural network (RBFNN) is proposed. The accurate fault distance is got by the offline training of neural network and online compensation for the fault location results with single terminal data. Using Matlab/Simulink verified the algorithm accuracy. The merits of the traditional fault, location algorithm with single terminal data, such as simple principle, lower cost, and independence on communication technology conditions, are retained, and the affection of transition resistance and distributed capacitor are considered to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional algorithm, whose fault location error is largely influenced by the grounding resistance and the distributed capacitor.
