Distribution power grid links directly to power end-users and plays an important part in daily life. Distribution power grid in urban areas usually has the heaviest load, highest load density, largest customers, and the highest requirement of power quality; thus construction of distribution power grid in urban area is more difficult than other ordinary areas. Recently, the traditional construction method has failed to meet the demand of economic growth. It cannot adapt to penetration of distributed energy source and rapid expansion of cities, and cannot meet the special need of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance work. Therefore, it is urgent to construct smart distribution power grid in urban area to meet the needs of economic development.Based on the pilot project of the state grid corporation for building smart and strong power grid--Ningbo Haishu distribution automation pilot construction project, planning and construction of smart distribution power grid in urban areas was studied in this paper. The construction of distribution power grid in urban areas was planned, and measurement indicators were proposed accordingly. Moreover, modification of system structure and equipment, construction and upgrade of distribution automation system, integration of distribution power grid information system, construction and renovation of distribution power grid communication system, penetration of distributed power supply were also studied. Based on international standards, the smart power information interaction system was established. The technical support integration system of dispatch and control for urban area was established as well. This paper gives the experience and theory support of smart distribution power grid planning and construction in urban areas of China.
