Owing to gantry crane's great lifting capacity, convenient operation,flexible lifting manner and can achieve two-way motion, gantry crane has beenwidely used in factories, construction sites, railway cargo yards, ports andhydropower stations and other places. This thesis focuses on the problem thatcurrent gantry crane consider dynamic load in the process of a variety ofoperating conditions by using the traditional static design method, in whichstatic load is multiplied by the dynamic load coefficient. These can not trulyreflect gantry crane's dynamic performance in the actual operation in the varietyof working conditions, so in this paper, virtual prototype technology is lead intothe design process of the gantry crane to real simulate the dynamic response ofthe crane in a variety of operating conditions, which will overcome the existsdefect of traditional static design method.In the first place, the structural parameters of the gantry crane andoperating parameters of lifting mechanism, trolley and cart running mechanismare determined by traditional design and calculation. On the basis of the gantrycrane parameters determining, the theoretical derivation of the kinetic model ispursued, which containe crane lifting conditions, the trolley running, theoperating conditions of the carts, cranes and the end buffer collision conditions.This lay the theoretical foundation of the virtual prototype simulation for thegantry crane. In the second place, gantry crane machine for virtual prototypemodel is builded by the use of3D design software Pro/E. The model is importedinto the ADAMS software through the seamless interface of Mechanism/Pro.What's more, crane cable modeling theory and methods are described in detailbecause it has a major impact in the entire simulation process, established cableand gantry crane assembled to take rigid body dynamics simulation analysis.Finally, the whole metal structural of the gantry crane is imported to ANSYSsoftware through a seamless interface, the metal structure of crane is meshedthrough a powerful meshing capabilities in ANSYS software, and then modal neutral file(MNF) is generated that is needed in the flexible body simulation. Asan alternative to the rigid body dynamics simulation in ADAMS gantry cranemetal structure, the rigid-flexible coupling dynamics simulation analysis is toimprove the simulation accuracy.So, in this paper virtual prototype technology is used in the design of thegantry crane to achieve a simulation, which the components of the crane in avariety of working conditions with the operating status of the load and timehistory. The results of the simulation output is to estimate and evaluate a varietyof data that the gantry crane is actually running. It has important practicalsignificance and will be better for overcoming the shortcomings, whichtraditional static design methods consider the dynamic load by using dynamicload coefficient and the using of finite element analysis is usually analyzingstructure's stress and modal analysis but unable to assess the overall dynamicperformance.
