Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge,a kind of perennial herb plant from labiate family, has been widely used inChina for centuries, its root can be used to make traditional Chinese medicine. Salvia miltiorrhiza Bgecontains mainly the composition of two categories: fat-soluble diterpenoid compounds (tanshinone) andwater-soluble poly-phenolic acids. With the intensification of human activities, the stratosphere, ozonedepletion led to an increase in UV radiation, UV radiation of the Earth is growing. Enhanced UV-Bradiation can change the plant secondary metabolites. In this paper, Salvia as experimental materials, paraffin section method, thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography wereused to study the effect of enhanced UV-B radiation on Salvia growth, development, and secondarymetabolites. The results show,1.Through the paraffin section method,we can get the internal structure of Salvia miltiorrhiza under afluorescence microscope. Under the condition of enhanced UV-B radiation, the observations of the firstset of treatments (UV-B radiation for15days) and the second group of treatment (UV-B radiation for30days) show that Salvia root of the internal basic structure do not have a change. Possible reason is that,Theroot of Salvia is below the surface, with the block of the soil, the amount of radiation of the roots reduce alot. so the structures are basically the same.2.Verified by TLC on effective medicinal ingredients of Salvia prove that Salvia contains mainly twotypes of active ingredients, one for fat-soluble diterpenoid compounds (tanshinone), and the other forwater-soluble poly-phenolic acids. Under the conditions of enhanced UV-B radiation,it gets that with onspectrophotometry,Content of plant leaves flavonoids increased significantly,UV-B radiation for15days and30days,flavonoids were increased by15.6%and26%in the two phases. The accumulation of theflavonoid content of plant leaves is an adaptation of plants to UV-B radiation and a protective measures.3. Enhanced UV-B radiation15days30days,Salvia roots of water-soluble components of salvianolicacid B in the two phases were down1.93%and4.72%. Fat-soluble active ingredient tanshinone I decreasedby7.14%and10.60%. Cryptotanshinone decreased by8.57%and11.84%, Tanshinone IIA decreased by9.30%and16.21%.Two types of effective medicinal ingredient content of Salvia with the enhancement of UV-B radiationwere reduced. Therefore, it can not be used that artificially enhanced UV-B radiation to improve medicinalingredients of Salvia in the cultivation of production.
