The 21st Century has been an era of incredibly fast development in the areas of scientific and information technology. Accompanying this extraordinary rate of development, the form and content of outdoor advertising seen a great deal of change; going from flat to three-dimensional, from silent to sound-complimented,and from images made by hand to LED based ads which have exploded onto today's advertising scene. Sparked particularly by the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China's 6oth anniversary in 2009, and the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, LED advertising has provided the media with a completely new form of advertising which has in turn prompted other designers and city planners in other cities to take notice of LED advertising and follow suit.In this new society with such rapid scientific, cultural and economic development, serving as a advertising designer means having the responsibility to pay close attention to the design of other works and consider how those works fit into the city's environment. Outdoor advertising is not merely advertising for advertising's sake, but it also has a responsibility to add to the cultural environment of the city in which it is located. Taken as a work of art, outdoor advertising should reflect the economic development of a city as well as serve as a reflection of a city's people's artistic taste. LED advertising must have an even greater degree of social responsibility, even raising public consciousness where issues call for it. The goal of this thesis will be to explore how to fully recognize how LED advertising is used in our city, as well as how LED advertising has influenced the development of Harbin to date. From this, this paper will discuss how LED advertising can be used to reach the goal of beautifying the city of Harbin. This thesis will use theoretical research and analysis of physical surveys to explore what role LED advertising has played in Harbin's construction so far, and further conclude how the design of LED advertising can both satisfy the needs of the sponsor while also adding to the beautification of the city and pleasing its residents.
