The Chinese study of settlement archaeology started in 1930s, and with the introduction of foreign theories and research methods, it has been becoming popular and thorough after'80s. In Shandong, now a province located on the eastern coast of China, the archaeological materials of Zhou Dynasty have been increasingly rich while cultural landscape and its space-time framework are basically clear. Besides, the study on chronological sequence of culture also has some achievements in Shandong. Based on the above information, this thesis attempts to study the settlementa and their causes in northern Shandong area, and thus explores the social relations in Zhou especially Eastern Zhou Dynasty.The thesis has five chapters.Chapter One:Introduction. This chapter includes the findings and state quo of Zhou archaeology, as well as ideas and research methods of this thesis.Chapter Two:Stages of major sites of Zhou Dynasty in northern Shandong area. According to the excavation findings in Jinan Palace and Ning's port in Zhangqiu, the author classifies the earthenware found in northern Shandong area, infers to their ages and establishes the sequences of Zhou's archaeological culture. Then, date stages of major sites in that area.Chapter Three:Study on forms of settlement during Western Zhou Dynasty including the early, the mid and late period in northern Shandong area. The study will include the distribution and the progress of settlements during each period, and will analyse their causes by means of literature and other writing materials.Chapter Four:Study on forms of settlement during Eastern Zhou Dynasty in northern Shandong area and the dynasty was separated into four period:the early, the mid and the late Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period The author will demonstrate great changes of settlements during these periods, especially in Warring States, and then, investigate the historical background of these changes with the help of reference materials.Chapter Five:Conclusion. This chapter will draw a conclusion from the above analysis and raise the inadequacy of the whole thesis.
