On The Translation Of Three Hundred Tang Poems From The Perspective Of The Creative Treason

This thesis analyzes the translation of Three Hundred Tang Poems by Professor Xu Yuanchong under the guidance of the theory of the creative treason, trying to prove that Tang poems are of different translatability degrees and the creative treason provides a new point of view on poetry translation and a new guidance for literary translation.With communications between different countries growing rapidly, the communication of different cultures becomes more and more important. The brilliant culture of China attracts many foreign scholars. As a precious treasure of China's long history, the traditional Chinese poetry is the great achievement of the wisdom and the creativity of us Chinese people. The Tang poems are the most famous ones in the traditional poetry. The Tang poems are famous for their various themes and great quantity. Many Tang poems have won high praise among people both at home and abroad. The Tang poems are the heritage of the whole world as well as China. Many scholars home and abroad have devoted their time to introducing the Tang poems to the western world by translating them into English and they have achieved great progress in this aspect. The translation of Tang poems has a long history, but because of the typical characteristics of Tang poems, a lot of difficulties emerge in the translation process of Tang poems, such as the rhythms, the sentence structures and so on. How to overcome these difficulties and transfer the distinct characteristics into English becomes an obstacle faced by the translators in translating Tang poems. There is a constant argument over the translatability of the poetry. Some scholars argue that the poetry is untranslatable because of the specific language characteristics and cultural differences. At the same time, many scholars have created many excellent translations of Tang poems, such as Professor Xu Yuanchong's translation of Three Hundred Tang Poem, which is often quoted and well accepted by scholars. These successful translations prove that the Tang poems are translatable even though there are many difficulties in the translation process. The introduction of the creative treason into the translation process of Tang poems not only provides a new method for the translators to translate the Tang poems, but promotes the development of literary translation. The creative treason was first put forward by the French sociologist Robert Escarpit. The Chinese scholar Xie Tianzhen has introduced this theory into the translatology and studied this theory in detail. In literary translation, the translators create new works on the basis of the original works. This is a second-time creation, so there will be the betrayal from the original works, which is inevitable in the translation process because of the existence of the differences between different language systems and cultures. This inevitable phenomenon also offers a new point of view on the literary translation for the translators.On the basis of the previous studies on the translation of Tang poems, this study tries to analyze the application of the creative treason in the English version of Three Hundred Tang Poems translated by Xu Yuanchong, proving that the poems are of different Translatability degrees and the creative treason provides a new method of translating Tang poems through the analysis of the samples chosen from Three Hundred Tang Poems. At the same time, there are many limitations of the thesis because of the time limit and other factors, such as the limited selection of the samples, the lack of the variety of the poetry themes and so on. In the future study of the poetry translation, the researchers may focus on those limitations and make more progress.
