The world of Modern Chinese Grammar has long confused complements ofdegree with"de"and complements of state with"de". Although Modern ChineseGrammar has defined complements, because of its complex structure, the complementconnected by the auxiliary word"de"(i.e."predicate + de+ complement", notincluding those describing possibilities) has always been a topic of much controversy.Based on the grammatical theory of three planes, the present study has made acomprehensive study of the representative views on complements of degree andcomplements of state, and done a comparative analysis on these different views. Onthe basis of this analysis, the controversial issues of the complements of degree withde"and complements of state with"de"are discussed. Accordingly this paperincludes five parts as follows:(1) Introduction. In this part, the genesis and scope of the present study ispresented, the state of the field and the delimitation of the two kinds ofcomplements discussed, and the significance and methods of the research areintroduced. In addition, the corpus sources of this research are also presented.(2) Exploring the complements of degree with"de". In this part, the characteristics ofcomplements of state are discussed and the complexity and diversity ofcomplements of state investigated from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic angles.Furthermore, the "Sub-Predicate" theory and "Post-Adverbial" theory areintroduced for the discussion of the complement of state.(4) Strategies on the teaching of Chinese to foreigners. In view of thedifficulties in the teaching of complements of degree with"de"and complements of state with"de", some teaching strategies are offered in this part.(5) Conclusion.
