College students'subjective sense of happiness is a reflection of their living standard, which also greatly influences their mental and physical health, growth and development as a whole. By adopting Duan Jinghua's revised "Scale of Subjective Sense of Happiness", and employing the method of interviewing, this research conducts a relatively systematic investigation on the status quo and causes of the subjective sense of happiness of 322 students among six colleges in Nanjing. The research analyses the influence of sex, major, birthplace, sibling number, monthly expense, sleeping condition, sporting habit and parents'education, while at the same time this research compares it with the data of their subjective sense of happiness, satisfactoriness of present situation, and concept of happiness which is achieved by interviewing, and finds out the characteristics and causes of their sense of happiness. The main results of this research are as follows:(1).Generally, students have a moderate sense of happiness.(2).There is a distinguish difference in the self-measurement of happiness between different sexes:male students tend to have lower subjective sense of happiness than female students in each aspect and total score.(3).Students of different majors show a distinctive difference in their subjective sense of happiness. Compared with students who major in science or art, students major in athletics are less likely to experience negative feeling concerning each aspect and the total score, and their positive emotional experiences, health status, and subjective sense of happiness are all lower than those of other majors.(4).Students graduating from different high schools show a distinctive difference in their subjective sense of happiness.(5).There is no distinctive difference of general sense of happiness between students who are the only child of their families and students who have siblings. Only when it comes to the negative emotional experiences, the former tend to have much more negative emotional experiences than the later.(6).Students with different monthly expenses show a distinctive difference in subjective sense of happiness, negative emotional experiences, health condition, and the total score. Students with a monthly expense between 600 yuan. to 800 yuan experience much lower negative feelings than those who spend more than 800 yuan per month, while students who spend less than 600 yuan monthly are in no better physical condition and score lower in the total score, compared with students with a monthly expense above 800 yuan.(7).Students of different sleeping conditions have a distinctive difference concerning their health status and the total score of subjective sense of happiness. There is a positive correlation between their sleeping condition and their score of negative emotional experiences. As for the positive emotional experiences, health status, and the total score of subjective sense of happiness, both students of good sleeping condition and students of relatively good sleeping condition score higher than students who have sleeping problems.(8).Students with different sporting habits show a distinctive difference concerning positive emotional experiences. Compared with students who spend more than one hour in sports, students spend less than half an hour score much higher in "positive emotional experience".(9). If the father/mother has received a higher education, the child is more likely to experience stronger emotions whether it is positive or negative, and may have higher total score of subjective sense of happiness, moreover, whether the father has received a higher education or not matters more than that of the mother in this aspect. When it comes to the 2*2 alternative effect of parents and whether have received a higher education or not, a child whose father has not received a higher education scores lower in negative emotional sense, positive emotional sense and the total score compared with that whose mother has not received one. When it comes to whether students state their happiness or not, factors such as family, interpersonal relationship, study, love relationship, economic condition, future, self, health, play an important role in the measurement of happiness. It can be found that students of different grades have quite different opinions about "which stage in one's life is the happiest" referring to their own experience. Most students are moderately satisfied with their current college life. Students hold that the highest expectations of happiness of love relationship, marriage, and family, but unexpectedly much lower expectations about work, life and salary. They also score relatively low in self-assurance.In the end, the paper gives ten suggestions which are classified into two categories on how to improve college students' subjective sense of happiness and paves way for the further research.
