Research On Oncology Medical Staff Psychological Stress And Coping Styles

In recent years, with the reform in the medical care system, the work pressure of the medical staffs is getting bigger and bigger. Medical staffs in oncology department is a special group in all medical staffs as a result of the specificity in their working environment and clients and it's very necessary to study their psychological stress and coping styles and their mutual relationship, and it can guide medical staffs how to face different stressor, strengthen their mental regulations, improve their mental health and provide practical and theoretical guidance for them. Based on present literature analysis, clinical trainee, semi-structured interview and open-ended surveys, the research sets Medical Staffs' Stressor Questionnaire and Medical Staffs' Coping Styles Questionnaire first. This research made statistics and analysis on the collected data from 159 medical staffs in oncology department in three general hospitals in Anhui province. It discusses on their psychological stress, coping styles and the feature relationship between stress and coping styles of health care staffs in oncology department.Results:1. The "Medical Staffs'Stressor Questionnaire" is constituted by three factors:work tasks stress, responsibility stress, interpersonal stress. The reliability assessment of Cronbach a coefficient is 0.889; the questionnaire has good content validity and constructs validity. The "Medical Staffs'Coping Styles Questionnaire" is comprised of three factors: negative emotion coping, positive emotion coping, problem solving. And it has good content validity and constructs validity.2. The stress of medical staffs in oncology department is in the middle level. And they gain higher scores in these aspects:work task stress and work responsibility stress. There are significant psychological stress differences in different groups of medical staffs in oncology department, and women's psychological stress,the pressure of work tasks and responsibility stress were significantly higher than males'(p<0.05); The nurses' psychological stress and the pressure of work tasks were significantly higher than the doctors'(p<0.01); With the increase of titles, The psychological stress of medical staffs in oncology department shows a decreasing trend, and the pressure of responsibility is significantly different (p<0.01). And the medical staffs in intermediate grade have the highest score in the pressure of responsibility.3. The main coping styles of medical staffs in oncology department are problem solving and positive emotional coping. There are significant differences in coping styles in different groups of medical staffs in oncology department. The score in positive emotional coping of the female is significantly higher than the males'(p<0.01); And different titles of medical staffs in oncology department are significantly different in positive emotional coping (p<0.001) and with the increase of titles, the psychological stress shows a decreasing trend; There is significant difference in positive emotional coping of medical staffs in oncology department in different ages(p<0.01),and the medical staffs between 20 years old to 30 years old have the highest score in positive emotional coping.4.The psychological stress and coping style of medical staffs in oncology department are positively correlated (r=0.383,p<0.001).Chi-square tests shows that different levels of stress coping styles used by the medical staffs are significantly different; Regression analysis shows that there are differences in different psychological pressure and coping styles.Conclusions:1. The self-designed evaluation questionnaires have good reliability and validity, and they can be effective tools to measure psychological stress and coping styles of medical staffs in oncology department.2. The stress of medical staffs in oncology department is in the middle level.Work task stress is the main source of psychological stress, and the main coping styles are problem solving and positive emotional coping. There is a mutual relationship between stress and coping styles of health care staffs in oncology department.3. Medical staffs can adjust their cognition and improve their abilities to cope with stress in a subjective way and the medical managers can control the stress and provide suitable catharsis channels and psychological counseling for medical staffs in an objective way in the adjustment of psychological stress medical staffs.
