Translator's Subjectivity In English Movie Title Translation From The Perspective Of Cognitive Schema Theory

With the deepening of China s opening up and the rapidly growing cultural exchange, a lot of English movies are introduced to China through various channels. And people come to pay more attention to the translation of English movie titles. In recent years, many scholars and experts also undertake some research on the translating strategies, cultural perception and the like in English movie title translation.As a form of commercial translations, English movie title translation plays an important role in present translation studies. This thesis argues that under the influence of cognitive schema theory, the translator can have more options during the process of translating English movie titles. According to cognitive schema theory, there is a dynamic and close relationship between schema and text. In the process of translating English movie titles, the translator should take the target audiences reaction into account, and flexibly choose different translating strategies and methods in accordance with different linguistic contexts and cultural contexts. The translator can convey the carried cultural information of the original movie title or the original movie properly by preserving, reinforcing and refreshing the existing schemata of the target audience. In this way, the target language audience can accept and understand translated movie titles.This thesis believes that the translator s subjectivity must be reflected in the translated text, while the embodiment of the translator s subjectivity is deeply influenced by cognitive process. First, the thesis gives a brief introduction to the development of translator s subjectivity , the important position in translation studies and previous studies on translator s subjectivity. Secondly, the thesis summarizes the concept of cognitive schema theory, gives a brief introduction to the influences of information processing mechanism, then comes to the conclusion that employing cognitive schema theory can better interpret the translator s subjectivity during the translating process of English movie titles. Moreover, under the guidance of cognitive schema theory, the thesis explores the embodiment of translator s subjectivity through the transmission mechanism of different schemata and choosing different translation strategies and methods in the English movie title translation.
