Applying discourse markers and and but properly can realize thesmooth and successful communication.This thesis is a supplementary research on the pragmatic functions of and and but onthe basis of formers' research. In the corpus,2200words are marked. The text analysis toolConcordance is used to calculate the statistics. The linguistic devices are tagged in thecorpus, followed by qualitative and quantitative analyses. The present thesis investigatesthe positions of and and but in the discourse, and finds out more falsifying pragmatic andsemantic functions.
