The Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) in Shanghai have been developing rapidly in the recent years. This study is an attempt to explore the development trends of the CCI through the analyses of the CCI Input-Output Tables of Year 2002 and Year 2007, which are the two most recent years that such tables were compiled. In the thesis, Chapters One and Two are the discussions of various definitions of CCI and prevalent research perspectives in the research of CCI. Chapter Three defines the sub-sectors of CCI based on the national industry classifications for the statistics in the Input-Output Tables. Then Chapters Four and Five provide a comparative analysis of the internal structures and external associations based on the statistics derived from the Input-Output Tables. Chapter Six provides the conclusions of the study as well as the recommendations for the future development of the CCI in Shanghai. From the analyses, it is found that the internal structure in Shanghai's CCI and the relationship between the sub-sectors of CCI have changed from linear structure to network structure. The trend of infomationization and commercialization is obvious in the internal structure of CCI. At the same time, Shanghai's CCI is building more external associations with the core industries in Shanghai such as the Finance Industry, automotive manufacturing and commercial trade. In addition, the economic pulling power of CCI is stronger than the tertiary industry, which shows CCI's leading capacity in Shanghai's economic growth and the pushing power appeared a high increase from 2002 to 2007. The both side ability shows its growing correlation with Shanghai industry development. It is also found that the ratio of intermediate output has increased significantly, which indicates that the CCI has been gradually integrated into the Shanghai production and distribution chain. In addition, employee salary has become the major part of the initial input (nearly 54% in total), which proves the theoretical speculations made by other scholars. The consumption of CCI output in the urban household is much higher than the rural household, which shows that the consumption level of the CCI products have been upgraded. Furthermore, the CCI has experienced a huge increase in imported products especially from the other provinces in China from 2002 to 2007, which shows Shanghai's growing leading role in regional economic development. In conclusion, this study outlines the following suggestions:first, adjust the internal structure of the CCI, especially with those high-technology and high-association industries; second, extend the external chain of the CCI, especially focusing on building stronger relationships with the finance industry, automotive manufacturing, design and manufacturing as well as the information technology industry; third, cultivate the high brand value of shanghai's CCI to further upgrade the consumption level and to expand input and export trade. Lastly, enhance the regional economic radiation power of Shanghai's CCI and establish a well-structured cultural and creative economic circle in the Yangtze Delta Region.
