Knut Hamsun(1859-1952), is a well-known novelist, playwright and poet in Norway. He presented for us the modern living predicaments and the loneliness of no solution through a series of works.This paper bases on Hamsun's four novels as research object. The four novels are Growth of the Soil, Hunger ,Pan and Wanderer. the research object, trying to illustrate the profound connotation of these works. Through analyzing the lonely in the works, identify five lonely types. Tell us the modern can't get rid of loneliness through the novels. loneliness is an encased knot. The preface of the paper introduces the living background of Hamsun and his creating situation briefly. The text is divided into four chapters. The first chapter defines the letter"loneliness"and introduces a few lonely images. The second chapter basically analyses five lonely images through the the four mentioned novels. Hamsun explain the loneliness of the modern. In the third chapter of the article, Hamsun express his view about the five lonely images. he positively praises some, but also obscurely criticizes some. Place some without any idea, what he can do is just look. No matter what kind of his attitudes to his characters, Hamsun gives these lonely the same sympathy and compassion. In the last part of the paper, Hamsun tells us that the loneliness is an encased knot through the failure of his lonely images.Through the analysis of four chapters, Hamsun shows the modern the lonely predicament, and tell us, if your don't want loneliess, you must estabilsh satisfied connection with the world. otherwise you will be bound to be lonely.
