Norwegian writer ——Knut Hamsun(1859—1952)was the winner of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1920,as the founder of the modernist literature,his literary views are worth studying.This paper choose his master works——Pan and The Growth of the Soil to explain the natural conception.The center of his works are unexplored nature and natural people,the focus is not the conflict between modernity and nature.It is a new natural conception:Even if human can change the form of nature,but they are not the master of it.Modern technology is not the opposite of nature,human need a closed space of nature.Some people adapt to the natural life,nature and modern society are a kind of parallel relationship,farming and hunting are the only useful way to survive.This paper is divided into five parts.The first part is introduction,it mainly introduces Hamsun's literary experience.Beyond that,the significance of this paper is explained in combination with the domestic and foreign review situation.The main part of the paper is divided into three chapters.Chapter one mainly discusses the basis and characteristics of Hamsun's conception of nature.Chapter two focus on the two novels——Pan and The Growth of the Soil.Explaining Hamsun's natural conception by detailed reading,the center are "Primordial spirit" and "Earth consciousness".The main content of chapter three is to further explain Hamsun's natural conception through his modern writing style.The conclusion part restates the thesis theme:Modernity and originality,city and nature,industry and agriculture.This three reference groups are not mere opposites.Even though there is conflict in the text,but that's not Hamsun's point.His greatest concern was the possibility of human life.Under the impact of modern society and life,they still regard nature as their habitat.Living on the land by primordial action.
