The design of homework is an important component in teaching Chinese as a second language. A well-designed homework will improve the student's grade and language proficiency. Therefore, the study of homework design is very valuable and important in teaching Chinese as a second language. However, currently there is very little research on this topic.This paper is a study of homework design in teaching Chinese as a second language. The references used in this paper include similar papers in the field of teaching English as a second language, Chinese education as first language and Chinese as a second language for minority in China. The paper is divided into five parts.The first part summarizes the results of relevant previous studies, in seven parts: the definitions of homework, the functions of homework, the types of homework, effective design principles and strategies of homework, the importance of correcting homework, and the methods of marking correction.The second part elaborates on the definitions and functions of homework in the context of teaching Chinese as a second language. This paper divides homework into four types according the language skills involved, and way of presentation. And also elaborates on the importance of correcting homework and its methods, which can be divided into methods of correction by students and methods of correction by teachers.The third part of the paper includes a survey gathering feedback from students of their thoughts on the current homework system in teaching Chinese as a second language. Through analysis of the results, the paper also discusses the problems revealed. The next part proposes strategies to solve these problems.The last part involves case studies of the homework currently employed in teaching Chinese as a second language. This paper attempts to identify current deficiency in teaching Chinese as a second language, and proposes practical ways to improve current homework system.
