The Beauty Of Grotesque In Chinese And Western Paintings

The leverage of social development is the market and the competition. Competition is the wheel of development and the root of differentiation. If mutual aid thanks to people's goodness, competition is caused by people's evil. Differentiation and evil are nothing to do with Aesthetics. Therefore, people are deconstructed into fragments and nature of art has changed. Flowers of beauty are replaced by those of Evil and aesthetics by ugliness. Differentiation and alienation grow serious more and more. Social life brings tremendous pressure. Philosophy turns particularly active. Post-modern art emerges successively. Artistic creation of grotesque comes out commonly. Imagery and phenomena of grotesque in paintings, which generates and develops continuously, have become contemporary paintings elements both in China and in western world. Its practical significance in paintings has been widespread concerned as one aesthetic form in the category of Aesthetics.This research is conducted from the perspective of the generation and development of grotesque imagery and phenomena to find out the reason of the phenomenon as below: social politics, economics, ideological root and the artists'aesthetic psychology. The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part explains the nature and connotation of grotesque as well as the present situation of its related researches. The second part studies deeply the sameness and difference of internal nature and external feature between Sino-Western grotesque, which on one hand prepares fundamental supports of analysis below and on the other hand illustrates its duality of beauty and ugliness. The third part analyzes the practical meaning of grotesque in Sino-Western painting and manifests the purpose and significance of this study. At the end, a basis conclusion is obtained and further thinking is aroused for the development of grotesque painting.Such a conclusion is able to be obtained as below. People are able to gain encouragement and consolation from grotesque in paintings. Artists should be aware of the extent of creativity, since what violence, gore, porno, nausea and other factors like these performs is a sort of ugly. If artists demonstrate such ugliness extremely, grotesque would only be equivalent to vulgar and unsightly art. Instead, artists should create more positive and beautiful grotesque painting works. Therefore, further studies are required to be conducted on the issues of grotesque painting.
