Rene Magritte is one of the important representatives of surrealist painting.Andre Breton, the surrealist movement leader, spoke highly of him as "Best interpretation of the spirit of surrealism painter". Magritte uncharacteristically portrays ordinary things, comical and ugly, funny and frightening. Weird is the most important aesthetic characteristics in Magritte’s Art. The Surrealist is also a unique grotesque painting master.Compared to grotesque paintings of master Bosch Hieronymus, Bruegel Pieter, Salvador Dali and Max Ernst, Magritte’s grotesque paintings reflect unique personality. He links two kinds of ordinary things random, and this anomalous composition gives cordinary things a fresh look and have a sense of mystery. In grotesque paintings of master Bosch Hieronymus, Salvador Dali, Bruegel Pieter etc, the face has rich expressions, body movements are often exaggerated exposed, which erodes audience blatantly with fear. Differently, Magritte’s grotesque paintings not only are lack of characters facial expressions and body movements, but also the sense of terror with poetic elegance. His paintings have simple and prominent theme, and the profound meaning of the work has given people more thought-provoking thinking. Magritte’s magical imagination fills in the every place in the paintings and shines light of wisdom. Grotesque painting’s unique form of expression profoundly affect media art, public art, fashion, art, and more become a source of inspiration for pop artists-Andy Warhol, Anthony Browne and so on, illustrators and design masters.For contemporary readers and viewers, especially those youths close to avant-garde art, online and media, creative and abnormal idea in Magritte paintings already commonplace, because they see it more frequently and feel no strange. Although Magritte’s is not known like Dali and Picasso, in fact, the people who learn and imitate Magritte are too numerous to mention one by one, even more learners than Dali and Picasso. The audience sees more works of copying and imitating Magritte’s, so they do not feel the magic of the Magritte original works. But once set Magritte’s paintings back to time in situ, grotesque features will be maximize revealed. This paper interprets features of Magritte’s grotesque paintings with grotesque aesthetic theory, the use of the image, psychology and other research methods. So that not only make readers see Magritte’s unique grotesque style and found the essence of Magritte’s art by his special portray, but also has a certain guiding significance.
