Modern is the special development period, in which many language phenomenon appear or disappear. Compared with Old Chinese and Ancient Chinese, Modern Chinese changed a lot in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. It also changed a lot compared with Recent Times. "JIANG"(将)is the representative for this change. In modern times, "JIANG'(将) is used very actively. It can not only be used as a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a preposition, an auxiliary verb, and a conjunction, but also as the word-formation elements to form a noun, a verb, and an adverb, In all, different periods have different "JIANG" (将).The usage of "JIANG"(将)developed from simple to complex in Old Chinese, and it is on the contrary in Ancient Chinese. In Qing Dynasty, the period of transition from Modern Chinese to Recent Chinese, the usage of "JIANG"(将)is developed from complex to simple. "The Scholars"(《'林外史》)represents the language outlook of Qing Dynasty. This thesis will start from the synchronic perspective, analyzing the usage of "JIANG"(将)in "The Scholars"(《'林外史》),at the same time, combining with diachronic corpus, expound the grammar progress and its term and incentive. In "The Scholars"(《'林外史》),"JIANG"(将)can be used as a noun, a verb, an adv, a preposition, an aux and the word-formation element, not a conjunction and an adjective. According to whether "JIANG"(将)can be used singly and its syntactic function, this article will be divided into three parts, after that, it will be the grammar progress. This article has four chapters not including the Introduction and Conclusion. The Introduction includes the reasons, the research purpose and the significance of the study, and introduces the research achievements, the theory background, the research process, data sources and the questions to be solved.In Chapter One, as the morpheme, "JIANG"(将)will be used as the Nominal morpheme, Dynamic part-of-speech morpheme and Vice part-of-speech morpheme. This chapter will describe these separately, and the formed polysyllabic words then the diachronic change of these polysyllabic words.In Chapter Two, as the notional word. It will be described as a noun and a verb. As a noun, the syntactic specifications of "JIANG"(将)and as a verb, the syntactic environment is discussed.Chapter Three has three parts of analysis of "JIANG"(将)as the adv, the prep and the aux. At the same time of describing the different speech and the different grammar meaning of "JIANG"(将),this article will discuss the classifications of "JIANG"(将).Chapter Four will describe the grammar progress of "JIANG"(将)in "The Scholars"(《'林外史》).In this chapter, it will firstly introduce the previous research, the grammar progress of "JIANG"(将)in "The Scholars"(《'林外史》) according to its usages, and the incentive agent and the mechanism of causing the grammar progress, last through the grammaticalization of "JIANG"(将)test the principles of grammar progress.The Conclusion part summarizes the research.
