China is the world's most populous country, with a continuous culture stretching back nearly 4,000 years. Many of the elements that make up the foundation of the modern world originated in China, including paper, gunpowder, credit banking, the compass and paper money. But how is it that the image of the country that gave so much to the world has been damaged and nowadays being considered as the "world's factory"? Following its accession to the WTO, China joined an already globalized world. One of the effects of globalization is the homogenization of culture. This research studies the path that the country with the fastest growing economy in the world is following to create and preserve its own voice and by doing so, maintain an important place in the world not in an economic, but in an ideological way. It is a main objective in China's agenda to export its soft power. With an innovative attitude, this country aims to establish creative clusters all over the main cities in order to be able to regenerate its urban scene which will help in the creation of a new self image. The research exposes the case of M50, one of the precursors of creative clusters in Shanghai and which is considered a real content maker, in comparison to other creative clusters which are believed to be specially made to display a renovated city's image. Through a series of interviews I intend to better understand whether it is possible to produce urban regeneration in three of the main cities in China Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, through the establishment of creative cluster and therefore fulfill the aim of this country of transforming them into creative cities, and by doing so, reinvent their image.
