A Contrastive Study Of Korean And Chinese Euphemisms

As an efficient lubricant in human communication, euphemism is not only a language phynomenon but also a culture phynomenon. Different cultures possess different euphemisms. With more and more international exchanges, people in different nations communicate more and more, thus euphemism interpretation in cross-culture communication turns very important. In order to reveal the culture and pragmatic characteristics of euphemism, further to interpretate and apply euphemism successively in cross-culture communication, it is quiet important to understand and master the differences between Chinese and Korean euphemism. If we command the differences poorly and use them unproperly, we may cause misunderstanding, making atmosphere embarrassed.China has a more comprehensive study of euphemism, throughout the history of euphemism, many Chinese and foreign scholars have studied euphemism from different aspects, such as sematics, sociolinguistics, retoric, spycology and pragmatic aspects, etc. And they achived a lot. Meanwile achievements in Korean euphemism study are fewer. Comparision of euphemism study between two countries focuses on Chinese and English euphemism, while such study is fewer between Chinese and Korean euphemism. In this paper, we use euphemism as the entry point, study Chinese and Korean euphemism for comparision and analysis, discuss the similarities and differences between the two countries, and elaborate the historical and cultural background and social ideological connotation of the euphemism.This paper is dividended into four chapters, the specific contents are summarized as follows:Chaper One mainly discusses the definations of Chinese and Korean euphemism and the status of the comparative study between the two countries.Chapter Two compares and analizes the charateristics of Chinese and Korean euphemism from the voice and vocabulary aspects.Chapter Three mainly compares and analizes the Chinese and Korean euphemism from death, disease, secretion, excretion and occupational aspects.Chapter four elaborates the historical and cultural background and social ideological expression of the Korean and Chinese euphemism.
