Since the New Age, the research on Zhou Zuoren's literary criticism has being on two aspects, first, theoretical researches focused on Human Literature and Personal Garden, and secondly, practical criticism involved in key words such as individuality, tolerance, interests and so on.Because the literary criticism history bases on the whole evolution of the literary criticism and thus emphasizes on a critics'overall view, it has often omitted and simplified the internal logic trivial and partial features of Zhou Zuoren's literary criticism. So this thesis, which refers to the methods of structuralism, tries to clear up two forms of Zhou Zuoren's literary criticism, which changed from his literary ideas to his practical criticism. The conception of Zhou Zuoren's Human Literature, which this thesis begins with, can be explained from two perspectives. From the side of human, according to theory of human nature, Zhou advocated human's subjectivity, scientific philosophy and the freedom of spirit all his life. From the side of literature, Zhou converted his goal from human to individuality. Correspondingly in the early Zhou Zuoren adopted the mode of social cultural criticism concerning social and political benefits, and in the late he took advantage of impressionist criticism belonging to an aesthetic kind. Finally this thesis compares Zhou Zuoren's literary criticism to Qian Gurong's theory and Li Jianwu's criticism, that enables the value and insufficiency of Zhou Zuoren's literary criticism more intelligible.
