China and Vietnam are two nations tied in a friendly and hospitable relation for so many generations with the interplay in both political and cultural terms that there are numerous Chinese compositions absorbed by Vietnamese language in which Sino-Vietnamese words may set the best example. Nowadays there are a great number of Sino-Vietnamese words in Vietnamese language which denote tremendous resemblances to corresponding Chinese and it is perhaps the reason for Vietnamese students being able to learn Chinese without teachers. However, the differences in between of these two bring troubles to the learners as well. Many distinctions have been observed through the comparison and analysis in the meanings of Sino-Vietnamese words and-their corresponding Chinese words which well lead to misusage of words when Vietnamese students represent themselves in Chinese. Findings revealed from a survey among sixty numbers of students with respectively elementary, intermediate and advanced level of Chinese language proficiency in Hanoi National University of Vietnam dictate that mistakenly using Chinese words by Sino-Vietnamese words is mainly because of the deviation in the meaning of those two kinds which may be split into three categories, namely, permutation, multi-translation and scope of word meaning. Meanwhile, it can be concluded under the interlanguage theory that the interference by mother language, learner's qualification and teaching methodology are the principal factors that result in the erroneous understanding to the word meanings by Vietnamese students. This article aims to provide Vietnamese students with the appropriate method of studying Chinese vocabulary by analysing the types and causes of errors therein so as to achieve the minimization of wrongful usage of Chinese words among Vietnamese students and the improvement of the quality to teach Chinese vocabulary for foreigners.
