"Thunderstorm", "The West Chamber" Polysyllabic Words Contrast

The study of book's Polysyllabic words is one of the important subjects in research of the Chinese vocabulary,which may include both horizontal and vertical aspects.First,the horizontal study can reflect Chinese polysyllabic words' characteristics and laws in different periods.on this basis,contact the language facts of each period to research the inheritance,development,the differences and similarities,it can help to do longitudinal comparative research of different periods of Chinese polysyllabic words.It is thus clear that cohort period study of book can lay the foundation for research of Chinese Vocabulary History.Yuan-Dynasty zaju plays and stage plays are important carrier which reflect the Chinese language facts of modern and contemporary times.《The West Chamber》 and 《Thunderstorm》are just the typical texts of these two periods,they are both important corpus to research the development of Chinese words in modern and contemporary times.This article does comprehensive horizontal research of these two books's polysyllabic words by exhaustive way.From lexical and semantic perspective,we strive for a comprehensive description of these two books'polysyllabic words,and explore the characteristics and laws of the polysyllabic words in respective periods. At the same time,put those language facts into the vocabulary history river,base on the detailed description,we compare and analyse these two books'polysyllabic words carefully,and do vertical study of the polysyllabic words's development and evolution between modern times to contemporary times in order to explore the general rule of Chinese polysyllabic words'development.There are six parts in the article:Part One: General summary on the value and the current situation of the research on 《The West Chamber》 and《Thunderstorm》, and determine the defining standard of polysyllabic words. Part two to Part four:Generalizing coordinative polysyllabic words,compound polysyllabic words (coordinative compounds,subordinate compounds, complementary compounds,verb-object compounds,subject-predicate compounds, reduplications) and attached polysyllabic words of 《The West Chamber》 and 《Thunderstorm》 from the angle of grammar and meaning of the words,etc. While at the same time, making detailed depiction of its development situation on various era. And on the basis, bringing the simple polysyllabic words, compound polysyllabic words and attached polysyllabic words of 《The West Chamber》 and 《Thunderstorm》 in the the development process of the Chinese language to study, as well as comparing them through horizontal and vertical ways, so as to reveal the different characteristics of polysyllabic words between these two books.Part Five: List the polysyllabic words in the two books which can not be calssified in this article.Part Six:Conclsion.base on the description and comparative analysis in previous text,we sum up the characteristics of polysyllabic words in 《The West Chamber》 and 《Thunderstorm》and conclude the laws of polysyllabic words' development between modern and contemporary times.We can know from the comparative analysis that, from 《The West Chamber》 to 《Thunderstorm》, the trend of Chinese word's polyphony is still continuing.Overall speaking,there's little change in the internal structure of polysyllabic words;Compared with the phonological word formation,grammatical word formation continues to strengthen;Specifically speaking, in terms of the inner structure of polysyllabic words the performance of different word formation pattern have their similarities and differences which shows the characteristics of unbalanced development.
