In current cross-culture communication flow, what brings the greatest pride for all countries is its representative and featured traditional culture. Ethnic traditional culture is the soul and quintessence of each country. It's impossible to deny that, only when culture joins in cross-culture communication process, it just exists and survises immortally with the history flow. To be an important component part of national culture, propagating the traditional drama needs to pay more attention.Cheo opera is a form of stage performance that originated in the Northern countryside of Vietnam. The essay chooses it as the subject of study because, compared to other drama types, Cheo opera assords Vietnamese culture most typically. After thousands of Chinese domination,100years of French colonialism with penetration of outdoor cultures, a little part of Cheo opera was also affected by foreign dramas, created new kinds of Cheo opera. However, they only satisfied people's taste transiently, only existed in a short period before eliminated. Antique Cheo opera still preserved its inherent characteristics, becoming Vietnamese pride. But everything always changes daily. If Cheo opera did not take up new factors of culture, not integrate the common trend of era, it could not survive for a long age, but become a "dead culture".Like other traditional dramas, propagating Cheo opera is facing a hard problem of narrow transmission area mass communication hardly ever broadcasts Cheo performance, spectators, or don't have chance of or don't like relishing this art (ineffective media), etc. So propagation and preservation of Cheo opera become a considerable issue. On the point of communicationalism's view, the thesis will study present condition of Cheo performance and its reasons. It is divided into5parts."Introduction" shows the significance of topic choice, scope, and method, as well as related researchs by academics. From those we can see that there're only limited studies of Cheo opera on the view of communication. This is the originating point of idea.Chapter Ⅰ "Overview of Vietnamese Cheo opera", introduces the fold stage, pre-stage period before expanding as many kinds of different dramas as those now. After that, the essay continues with four development periods as well as the characteristics of Cheo opera. In addition, the part also brings the brief view the development of Vietnamese media, broadcast of Cheo opera on Mass Communication, including domestic and foreign transmission.in the current situation of domestic and foreign media, the thesis also analyses the theoretical basis of Laswell's5W communication model and gives some related proofs.Chapter Ⅱ"Reasons for current sombre propagation of Cheo performance", summarises the causes to push Cheo opera into "suburban area" in communication process. The reasons are originated from four factors in communication process, including:Communicator, content of media, audience and the communication environment. From the point of communication environment view, new technical development emitts the innovation in every aspects:Changing comsumer's viewpoint and behaviour. On media angle, communicator has already commercialized comsumers to reach high benefits. In the judgment of communication content, Cheo's symbols has many difficulties in propagation. Moreover, Cheo performance stands the lower rank than other new image products. On the point of spectator's view, they trend to choose the higher entertainment products.Chapter Ⅲ "Some ideas improve the propagation efficiency of Cheo opera", gives some stragies corresponding to current media situation and reasons which are mentioned in the chapter Ⅰ and Ⅱ. This part also derives from the side of communicator, media content and audience so that policies can be supposed to enhance the media result for Cheo performance. Conclusion, firstly, affirms that Vietnam is a multiculture country in a cross-culture communication for a long period. In that background, culture phenomenons exist alternatingly, so Vienamese attitude in culture acceptance is completely apparent. In such complicated cross-culture communication, the reasons of gloomy propagation is from many viewpoints, not only from coomunictors themselves. Finally, some efficient methods are summarized to improve the media of Cheo in Vietnam.
