"Chinese Dictionary" is a historical canon of Chinese language as well as the most extensivecompendium of Chinese vocabulary. The dictionary consists of twelve volumes, In all there are more than370,000items and approximately50millions words, relating to the society, military matters, customs andculture and other perspectives. The containing words are complete in meaning and items, rich in content,succinct in style, clear and correct in definition. And they can exactly meet the requirements of thedictionary of scientificness, informativeness and stability. As soon as the book was published, it has alwaysbeen the most important frame of references in the study of the history of Chinese vocabulary."ChineseDictionary" has also been praised by academia as the archives of Chinese vocabulary of present and past."Chinese Dictionary "has been highly praised by the academic circle ever since the publication of thefirst volume in1986. However, the key state projects has only taken for over two decades since the upfrontinput of arrangements for staff doing a series of preparatory work and the publication of the whole twelvevolumes. Thus due to time, substance, energy and other factors,"Chinese Dictionary" has failed to reachperfection. As it has obtained the achievement which attracts wide attention, simultaneously it also hasaccumulated many inevitable errors. They are mainly embodied in the original materials, interpretation,inaccurate citing and a few errors."Chinese Dictionary", as a large high-quality language reference book, has become highly valued byacademia since its first publication. It is quite convenient for our study and research so that we can benefit alot. It not only based on the editorial guidelines of "integrating the ancient and modern Chinese words,taking all schools into accounts",but also"even the wise are not always free from error", so is"ChineseDictionary". After the debut of"Chinese Dictionary", readers and researchers have found some questionswhich are well worth discussing as time goes on. A large number of experts and scholars at home haveconstantly revised"Chinese Dictionary" in many ways, striving for its excellence and accuracy.As a wide-ranging, diachronic language dictionary, the traceable illustrated cases and exact definitionsmake great contributions to the changes in vocabulary and semantics, being important aspects to ensure itsscientificness. With respect to the Chinese character "Cao" in volume nine of "Chinese Dictionary", the writer of this thesis attempts to give a certain amount of modification and addition to its insufficiency, toperfect the Chinese character, to make a contribution to learning and researching, to provide the referenceto editors and readers, as well as the revision "Chinese Dictionary" in the future, at the same time, Pleasedo not hesitate to give me your advice.
