Because of the acceleration of globalization, the Sino-Western cultural exchange increasing frequently. Many scholars interested in comparative study to Sino-Western art and are working hard on it. A number of scholars make an all-around and thoroughly comparative study to the Sino-Western art, but haven't pay so much attention to the comparative study of Still Life and Flower-and-Bird. Based on the former study, this essay aims to make a distinction between those two painting styles which developed under different time space and cultural background. Hope I can comprehensively grasp the different features of Sino-Western traditional paintings. The essay makes an elaborately comparative study to the Holland Still Life painting of17th century and the courtyard body Flower-and-Bird painting of Song Dynasty. The main body is introduced by the raise of questions, the history and current situation of comparative study, the aim of study and the approaches of study. The second chapter makes a summary of17th century Holland Still Life painting and Song Dynasty's courtyard body Flower-and-Bird painting. The third chapter discusses the similarities of those two painting styles. Firstly, the painting subjects of those two paintings are all flowers, fruits, vegetables, fish, animals and so on; secondly, they were all been ignored and at a lower level in their own art histories; thirdly, the two are share the same view at the pursuit of "reality". The west's value of visual reality and China's value of feeling reality show their common pursuit for "reality". The fourth chapter is the most important part of the whole essay; it focuses on the different Sino-Western cultural backgrounds and the ideal perspective of esthetic and also discourses the differences of they two. Western "subject-object dichotomy","form harmonious" and Chinese "people oriented","psychological harmonious" lead to the differences of those two painting styles on face painting, artistic style, interest and so on. Meanwhile, different society, political and economic environment bring up diverse reasons for their prosperous. In the last chapter, I make a brief summary of Chinese contemporary Still Life painting's development history and current situation, and lead some thoughts about the influence of comparative study to the development of Chinese contemporary Still Life painting. In the nearly one century's art exchange between China and Western countries, artists are absorbing the opposite side's essences consciously or unconsciously. That enriched the creation of our own country. Chinese oil painters should set foot on our traditional cultural, integrate the oil Still Life painting into our nation's cultural spirit and aesthetic quality.
