The second national sampling survey of people with disabilities in 2006 demonstrates that the total number of people with disabilities in Shandong province is 5.69 million, which constitutes 6.15% of the total population. As a vulnerable group in society, the disabled has drawn little attention by people. However, with the rapid growth of the total number of the disabled, the social integration of the disabled has drawn more and more concerns by the public. In building a socialist and harmonious society today, as an element of the society, the disabled of a large scale and with outstanding features and in great need of help, should participate in the process of the constructing, and has the chance to share the outcomes of the economic and social development. Only in this way, we can truly achieve the social justice, civilization and harmoniousness. The social care for the people with disabilities is an important part of the Chinese socialism and thus caring for the disabled is an important symbol of social civilization and progress.Yet what is the status-quo of the social integration of the disabled group, and what are the reasons to causes this? This paper aims to represent the disabled and the social integration of the disabled, combining with the basic condition of social integration of the disabled in Shandong province, using the methods of literature research and the Long Interview with the disabled, to find out their marriage, employment and other respects of their social lives. The paper describes three dimensions of the social integration of the disabled, that is, their economic, political and social life; and afterwards, the paper tries to analyze the reasons. The research shows that the degree of social integration of the disabled is limited. The gap is still great between the total level of the people with disabilities and that of the average people. The poor condition of the large number of disabled people has not got enough improvement. The disabled faces many difficulties in the basic income security, rehabilitation, education, employment, etc. People with disabilities are excluded in any aspect in social life, and they find it very hard to get included as normal social members. This paper mainly attributes the low degree of social integration of the disabled to negative institutional arrangement and social environment, and the lack of family support and the self-exclusion of the people with disabilities.
