Not having read Marx's Ethical Thought of 1844 Manuscript of Economics and Philosophy, Lukcas proposed his materialization theory from the perspective of Marxist commodity fetishism, which not only developed Marx's alienation theory but also triggered a climax in the research of materialization and alienation led by Horkheimer, Fromm and Marcuse. Even in China today the application of Lukcas' materialization theory in the analysis of social problems is still of guiding significance .Starting from Lukcas' theory of materialization this paper introduces its theoretical background, causes of emergence, boundary of definition, patterns of manifestation and the formation of materialization consciousness, then compares the similarities and differences between theories of materialization and alienation and proposes the advances made by materialization. In the end based on the analysis of the ubiquitous phenomena of materialization in present China's economy, politics and culture, this paper holds the view that the materialization and alienation phenomena could be dispelled through the implementation of the sustainable scientific development concept, the construction of a human-oriented harmonious society and the restoration of traditional cultural education with an aim at national development, social harmony and comprehensive improvement of individuals.
