Along with the economic globalization and knowledge-based economy, higher education, regional economy and social progress which used to be marginalized have related more closely, serving as the most important force in the advancement of science and technology. Currently, major countries and regions have, for the sake of economic soar, spared no effort to promote higher education through various measures, while Chinese government as well attaches great importance to the coordinated development among Higher education, regional economy and social progress. The acceleration of sound interaction between higher education and regional economy is the key for Sichuan province, the economic and cultural powerhouse in Southwest China, enjoying a sound, orderly and stable society, and the reputation of strong education via promoting higher education. The Essay, guided by the third function of higher education theory and theory of economic growth, and applied by qualitative, quantitative and empirical analyses, aims to provide suggestions for Sichuan's coordinated development of higher education and regional economy by means of reviewing the reciprocity and the existing issues between Sichuan's higher education and regional economy through analysing current situation of the above mention two aspects qualitatively and assessment indicators affecting higher education and regional economic growth regressively, based on the researches home and abroad.According to research, the strong tie between higher education and regional economy of Sichuan has proved their inter-independence to some extend, while it is found through regression analysis that Sichuan's regional economy lags far behind the average level of higher education due to the lack of sound interaction and coordinated development between the two. Deviation has appeared in some degree in development, as the relatively abundant educational resources does not drive regional economy as expected, while the latter fails to show enough support for the development of higher education. Sichuan provincial government therefor should, according to local situation, increase investment in higher education while optimize its composition; and enhance regional competitiveness by boosting regional economy and ameliorate unbalanced economic growth.
