With the fast development of modern distance education, Moodle, a course management system, also known as a learning management system or a virtual learning environment, is now in service in a growing number of colleges and institutions. Ever since 2006, more and more research and application concerning Moodle have been witnessed in China, which indicates that Moodle boasts competitive edges, though problems occur. Moodle is serves for the teaching, and effective teaching evaluation standard is the effective learning, is student's progress and development. This thesis focuses on the study of Moodle distance learning effectiveness, analyses existing problems and propose solutions in order to better assist teachers with their utilization of Moodle, improve students'learning effectivenss and for the long run contribute to the healthy development of distance education and educational information technology.The thesis first analyses the current trends of theoretical research and utilization of Moodle home and abroad, defines concepts related and states Moodle's features and functions as well as the distance learning patterns based on it. Secondly; according to theories on learning effectiveness, the analysis of the effectiveness. An evaluation criterion is also proposed for Moodle distance learning effectiveness. Thirdly, based on the case study, the Moodle distance learning effectiveness is found to be less satisfactory, mainly for the following reasons that students lack learning initiatives; that teachers provide inadequate supervision; that course resources are not well designed and assigned; that width and depth are needed in online interactions; and that Moodle function application is a single. Last but not least, the thesis presents five feasible solutions to the improvement of the learning effectiveness in respect of students'subjectivity, teachers'leading role, learning resources, online interaction and Moodle support service. The solutions are expected to contribute to the better application of Moodle distance learning in the country's tertiary education.
