The reform and opening-up, started in the late 1970s, has created favorable conditions for urban and rural population floating. The transfer of lots of rural surplus labour force has produced an enormous amount of vulnerable group—left-behind children. Due to the long separation with parents, and the lack of effective guardianship from family, school, and society and so on, a series of problems have appeared among most of left-behind children, which affect their healthy growth, and bring adverse effects to left-behind children family and the society. This article choose Longxi, a typical agricultural county in poverty-stricken western areas in Gansu province, as the research object. In order to better analyse the guardianship of left-behind children in the stage of compulsory education in Longxi county, the paper conducted on-the-spot investigation and sent questionnaires in three middle and primary schools in Longxi county. The questionnaires involve the monitoring related problems like outdoor-workers situation, the contact between migrant workers and their children, the left-behind children daily study, life, psychology, etc. On the basis of statistics and analysis, such issues as family education loss, psychological troubles and worrying study exist among left-behind children. Family problems of limited parent ability and improper educational methods, school problems of rural school conditions and lack of sufficient qualified teachers, social problems of social environment and policy as well as left-behind children own characteristics combined to result in these issues. The guardianship of left-behind children is related to minors' growth, family harmony, social stability, and national development, which deserves widespread concern.
