As the current social development process accelerates, more and more people in cities choose to study or work in bigger cities. In this process, children can only be supervised by grandparents or other family members, which leads to the increase in the number of left-behind children. At present, the phenomenon of left-behind children in rural areas is relatively common, and its problems have been widely concerned and studied, while the marginalization of left-behind children in urban areas is prominent. In recent years, the government and all walks of life have paid more attention to left-behind children in cities, but they have their own inherent characteristics. In the absence of parents’ attention and care, the lack of self-care ability is particularly prominent. The problems of self-care ability of urban left-behind children are low self-acceptance ability, weak self-regulation ability and poor self-value.It is a new topic to use group work to support urban left-behind children through peer groups and improve their self-care ability.Taking Y community of Hulunbuir city as the investigation object, this paper investigated and analyzed the status quo of self-care ability of urban left-behind children. With the cooperation and support of community staff and psychological guidance teachers, the scale analysis was completed. In the design process of group work, six group activities were carried out to improve self-care ability according to the set goals. Finally, through the evaluation,we feel that group activities are easy to be accepted by urban left behind children, and the mutual support and help of peer groups have a significant effect on improving the self-care ability of urban left behind children. Therefore, using group work to improve the self-care ability of urban left behind children is a method worthy of practice.
