The problem of the underachievers is widespread in modern education, which is so inevitable that no educator can deny it. This thesis focuses on the English underachievers in senior high school. Firstly, senior high school is very important in one's life, in which students are confronting enormous academic pressure. Secondly, English is one of the three main subjects. English underachievement in senior high school has a significant impact on the students'future development. How shall we improve the English language acquisition of underachievers? And what are the effective transformation methods? Tolstoy, the famous educator, once said that successful education is not mandatorily-required, but to stimulate the interest and enthusiasm of the students. Interest is the motivation of learning. Successful education should try to cultivate students' learning interest. Interest is very important for learning English. It not only runs through the entire English learning process, but also is the key to academic success. Therefore, in order to transform the senior high school English underachievers into achieved students, we must cultivate their interests in learning. However, it is not an easy task. We must develop and take effective strategies. Thus, this study is to explore strategies to cultivate the interest in learning English of underachievers in senior high school with the title "Research on strategies to cultivate the learning interest of the English underachievers in senior high school"This research is mainly in the form of experimental teaching. Before the experiment, the present writer sends out questionnaires to the English underachievers in their second year of a certain senior high school in Nanjing in order to survey the status quo of their interest in English learning. Then, in combination with other factors, two parallel classes are chosen which have a higher concentration of underachievers, one class as the experimental group and the other the control group. English proficiency test is given to the two groups. During the experiment, the traditional teaching methods are used continually in the control class, while in the experimental class, a series of targeted measures and plans are adopted. After the experiment, there are questionnaires and another English proficiency test. Finally, the SPSS17.0 is used to analyze the experimental data statistically.Through the use of a series of planned and targeted measures, such as layer teaching, teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, paying attention to the affective factors, etc., the study finds that:after the experiment, the learning interest of the underachievers in the experimental class is obviously increased, and the learning enthusiasm is also vastly improved; the experimental class performed significantly better in the post-test than that in the pre-test; after the experimental teaching, the experimental class performed significantly better than the control class. Therefore, the conclusion can be drawed:the learning interest of English underachievers in senior high school can be inspired and developed; after enough attention paid to and effective education, their results can be significantly improved.
