By the end of the 1970s, the Communicative Approach was brought into our country. With its aim focused on developing students'communicative competence of using language, especially listening and speaking skills, the advantages of this method has been seen by people during the past decades. However, the teachers have also met lots of difficulties in carrying on it under the special situation of China. Therefore, people found that it is not an ideal teaching method in China. The author of this thesis has investigated the present situation of the use of this method in English teaching both in primary and secondary schools in the city of Nanjing, in order to find out the existing problems of this teaching method, analyze the possible reasons, put forward some useful suggestions to solve the problems, and search for a more effective way to enhance the learners' communicative competence.In the preface, the thesis introduces the researching background, researching aims, significances and the contents of the methods. In the following chapters, some related theories about the Communicative Approach are mentioned. This thesis has also analyzed the research on the main teaching methods used in China, as well as the present situation of the use of Communicative Approach in Enlish learning and teaching in some areas of Nanjing. Then, it focuses on the reasons which may cause the failure of Communicative Approach in schools in China and the study of the relevant effective strategies, with the help of the result of the statistics and the related interviews. At last this thesis draws the conclusions and offers some initial suggestions to the teachers, relevant educational units and the students, hoping to provide people with some references in the course of studying and effectively carrying out the Communicative Approach.
