To develop the students'interest in learning English and to cultivate the students' integrated skills through classroom instructions are the aims of the English Curriculum Standards. In a traditional classroom, English teachers have been paying much attention to teaching language points and the students are used to listening to the teachers and haven't got enough time to practise using English in class. As a result, teachers and students have been both exhausted because of spending much time struggling to learn with only little progress. However, in an ecological classroom, students can characteristically put the teaching content into practice on their own, which can easily make them interested in what they are learning and help them develop good English learning habits. Besides, students can get higher marks and what's more, they can improve their integrated skills. Therefore, based on the basic principles of an ecological classroom, this study reviewed the previous researches first. Then the researcher carried out an action research of teaching English in the ecological classroom in a secondary school. The experiment was tested among the 82 students of Grade 7 from a town in Jiangsu Province. It lasted for a term. During the term, the students attended two tests and answered two questionnaires. In order to do the experiment more smoothly, the researcher interviewed the students three times to get more information about what they felt about the experiment. Afterwards, the researcher used SPSS 13.0 to analyze the collected data of the two tests and the two questionnaires. The results show that teaching English in an ecological classroom in secondary schools can:(1) increase the students'interest in English learning and develop students'good learning habits; (2) improve students'integrated skills and also make them get higher marks.
