With the development of politics, economy and culture, English is playing an increasingly important role in the world. However, the efficiency of English learning and teaching in middle school of China, particularly English reading, is not satisfying. In order to improve the situation, the author makes great efforts into the research of efficient teaching model for English reading. The author investigated students of three middle schools who are very representative in ZhongShan city and talked with the selected teachers to know the current situation of English learning and teaching. It is found that the students can't improve their reading ability mainly because teachers act as the leader of the reading classes, while the students are treated as containers. Having searched for a great amount of theories and combined rich teaching experience, the author puts forward a new teaching pattern for self-regulated reading. The new teaching pattern "Instructed Self- study " means that students are supposed to preview the reading material with the help of learning guidance and then the teacher instructs, inspires and evaluates what the students have previewed in order to train students how to learn, think and gain knowledge by themselves. It combines before-class learning with during-class learning, students' self-learning with teacher's guidance, and knowledge with ability. To test the efficiency and feasibility of the pattern, the author carries out a one-year experiment. Experimental classes include one of the author's classes and other 9 parallel science classes, while the controlled classes are the author's another class and 9 other parallel science classes. The empirical research shows that the new teaching pattern can to some extent strengthen students'Self-Regulated Reading(SRR) capability and furthermore improve their academic achievements. It also has considerable effects on their motivation, reading strategies and learning resources. But it keeps much for improvement in such aspects as how to guide and change the students' dependence on teachers.
