The new curriculum of art education has been put into effect for ten years since the launch of the curriculum reform. It has injected new vitality into the art education of elementary and high schools. However, it has also brought many new challenges, especially when carried out in the junior high schools in rural areas; the reform is facing lots of difficulty.The curriculum reform raises the bar for art education in rural junior high schools. From perception building, administration, and infrastructures of art education, to the overall competencies and teaching skills of faculty members, it demands dramatic change and improvement. Therefore, it calls for immediate attentions to study the results of new curriculum in rural junior high schools as well as develop effective countermeasures.This thesis is divided into three parts including introduction, body and the ending. The body consists of three chapters.Introduction: In this part, the author presents the status quo of the reform of art education as well as raises problems to be solved, summarizes the studies of the reform both at home and abroad, and establishes the position and the value of this project.Chapter One: This part mainly discusses the background and requirements of the curriculum reform of art education.Chapter Two: A survey about how art education in the new curriculum is carried out in rural junior high schools. This part mainly explores the art education in rural areas that troubled by exam-oriented education system, and its present situation as well as the problems along with their root causes.Chapter Three: Proposed solutions on how art education in the new curriculum should be carried out in rural junior high schools. In this part the author presents suggestions at strategic level on renewing the education concepts, increasing the input into education and completing the system of assessment. Meanwhile, at operational level, the author recommends strengthening the development and administration of the curriculum, bettering the professional competencies of faculty members and continuing the curriculum reform in order to improve the art education, therefore innovate the art education in rural junior high schools and encourage the all-round development of students with no compromise of individuation.The Ending: This part summarizes the whole thesis and tells us what we should work towards.
