Abstract China, as a multi-ethnic country, is characterized by unity in diversity in ethnic culture, which is also presented in peoples'folk dances. Dancing is a kind of cultural phenomenon; folk dances record historical and cultural information of certain areas and their peoples. In a world of global integration, ethnic folk dances are invaluable intangible cultural heritage and contribute to the preservation and inheritance of the diversity of our country's traditional culture. The original dance teaching in the higher education functions a supplementary supportive role, compared with the inherent folk descending traditional forms; however, it is still difficult to avoid the self-limitations on aspects of diffusion, teaching and audience. This leads that although dance teaching in higher education plays a historical role in the protecting and inheriting folk dances, it still has some imitations, which places distinctive value and significance to the protection and heritage of folk dances. Then extra-curricular folk dance teaching in primary and secondary school becomes very significant: it is beneficial to students'improvement of comprehensive quality; it is crucial to folk dance heritage, national unity, and the construction of the harmonious society; and it also can help to promote the formation of multi-cultural situation. This paper, taking the folk dance teaching in primary and secondary students'extra-curricular activities as research object, based on theoretical analysis ,and combined with the author's teaching practice and investigation, makes preliminary research on the feasibility of teaching ethnic folk dances in primary and secondary students'extra-curricular activities.
