Secondary institutes came into being in the Middle Ages Universities in Europe, and settled in China in 1928. As its development in China more than ten years, along with the national "211 project" and "985 project" implementation and deepening, Chinese higher education facilities has accumulated rich experience in building secondary institutes, and gradually formed their own characteristics. Then it powerful promoted our universities construction and development. Hence, to explore a suitable management model of secondary institute in Chinese research universities has very important theoretical and practical significance for all-round and quick development of Chinese higher education.The article is divided into five chapters. The first chapter describes the main purpose, significance and the innovation points of this study, as well as the research methods. The second chapter discuss the basic concept nature, characteristics and tasks of secondary institute in Chinese research universities, and then make use of modern management theory to analysis the feasibility of management of secondary institute, especially pay attention to the theory of Functional Structure and Matrix Structure, which lay the theoretical foundation for the operation of secondary institute. The third chapter is to introduce the present status of secondary institute in Chinese research universities, and analyze the management problems in secondary institutes of research universities. The forth chapter illustrates the building of management model in secondary institutes of Chinese research universities, systematically introduces the meaning of management mode, the principles and ways in the process of building the secondary institute, and then put forward a matrix management structure which specifies a clear direction for the development of secondary institute in Chinese research universities. The fifth chapter is conclusion.This paper, introduce the present status of secondary institutes in Chinese research universities in detail through literature analysis and interviews methods, etc, and point out an model of matrix management in building secondary institutes on the basis of the present status of secondary institutes, which will have certain reference and value for scholars in researching such issues in future.
