National quality has become the core of competitions of the comprehensive national power. In recent years, the concept of quality-oriented education is growing in popularity in China."The National Medium and Long Term Educational Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020)" has defined it as a strategic theme of education to implement. However, according to the current results, there is a long way to go.Hu Shi was a famous modern Chinese scholar, thinker, and advocator of the ideas of "culture-oriented national development strategies" and "saving the nation by education". As an important historical figure, his thoughts are constantly discovered and explored. He was not only one of the central figures of the New Culture Movement, but also an important figure in the history of Chinese modern education. Almost his whole lifetime was dedicated to education. He always stressed the priority of education in strategic development, and put forward a large number of educational theories and plenty of educational thoughts that include quality-oriented education. This paper tries to explore Hu Shi's thoughts on quality-oriented education so as to provid valuable references for current quality-oriented education.This thesis deals with the topic in the following aspects:The thesis first gives a brief introduction of Hu Shi's education activities and his thinking process basing on his hometown education, new education in Shanghai, university education in the United States and teaching and running a school. The second part studies the content of Hu Shi's quality-oriented education from the precondition, purpose and meanings of quality-oriented education. The third part studies the ways to implement his quality-oriented education from four aspects——educational mechanism, teachers, innovation of concepts and rigorous scholarship. The fourth part analyses the characteristics of Hu Shi's quality-oriented education. The last part discusses the realistic significance of Hu Shi's quality-oriented education.
