Induction provides an important link between pre-service and in-service teachering training. A good induction programme not only makes a difference in the retention of new teachers but also shapes their practice in many positive ways and puts them on the path to high-quality teaching. However, induction is a relatively newly-emerged thing and there is no national systematical induction for teachers in China at present.Statutory arrangements for induction of Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) was introduced in1999in England. It was intended to ensure that all NQTs have a systematic and consistent induction with thorough assessment, and to establish that every NQT should receive a programme of monitoring and support during their first year of teaching. Since the introduction of the statutory induction policy in1999, the quality of provision for NQTs has improved and the statutory induction is helping NQTs to be more effective Oteachers. This thesis analyses the statutory induction system for NQTs in England, including its background, developing history, basic framework and process, effect of the provision and etc. By generalizing the experiences of the statutory induction for NQTs in England, the thesis offers the reference for building statutory induction for new teachers in China.This thesis is written in eight chapters. It begins with the introduction of the main issue in chapter1, then literature review and the research methods of the thesis are given in chapter2. Chapter3and chapter4present the historical background, theoretic background and developing history of the statutory induction for NQTs in England. Chapter5and chapter6outline the basic structure of the statutory induction for NQTs in England. Chapter7focuses on the analysis of the experiences of the system. Chapter8provides some reference for the future development of statutory induction for new teachers in China.This thesis, in comparison with exsisting researches, focuses on the development of the statutory induction of NQTs in England since2003, which is comparatively rare in China. The thesis also gives a detailed introduction of the induction arrangement, the basic structure of the system in England applied since2008and the effect of the induction.
