English, as an international language and a tool of communication in learning advanced science and technology, is playing an important role in modern international society. With the degree of China reform and opening up increasing, English has become an important instrument of foreign exchange. English teaching opens up a window for China to understand the world. As the same time, with the global integration advancement and the economy society’s development, the world economy becomes integration. So English teaching is setting a higher request. As a main component of studying English, English classroom instructional activity is becoming particularly importance. However, in the daily teaching, there are still some shortcomings. As described:" More time wasted, less effective results". With the progress of New Course Reform becoming deeper, the New Course Reform gives the challenges and opportunities to English teaching in primary, junior and senior school. New Curriculum Standard asks us to change traditional teaching and teaching situation in class. With the Course reforming and New Curriculum Standard carried out, the tradition teaching form can’t go along with the new situation. New Curriculum Standard calls for students’initiative learning. So, how to design reasonable and valid English instructional activity is becoming the most important thing.Accompanied by the ongoing practices of innovation, the educational theories have drawn much attention from teachers and researchers. More and more creative ideas have been proposed, including the Activity-Oriented Teaching Scheme(AOTS). Some teachers and researchers have investigated the topic the Activity-Oriented Teaching Scheme and have some findings in this area.The AOTS may be defined as a teaching scheme which encourages pupils to actively participate in teaching and learning activities, that is, to think, to express his/her own ideas in English, to improve the sensitively of the English language and culture. Therefore, various teaching methods such as:listening, speaking, singing, role-play are utilized in the process of AOTS. AOTS can help to achieve the objective of the course English that has been specified by the "New Regulation of English Course" i.e." to allow students to access the English language from various channel and styles, to directly feel how the English language is utilized in practice."The classroom-based teaching, as a fundamental element of the basic education, is of high significance. A key question here is how to create various new schemes and styles for class-based teaching, which are able to largely encourage the students to learn. The statement of the author of this thesis is:AOTS in senior high school is a good candidate to serve such purpose. The great advantage of this scheme is to be able to help the students to become self-motivated discoverers, thus it can largely develop their various personal features.In view of the importance of classroom activities in English teaching, it is necessary to find out whether teachers in high schools can attach importance to classroom activities and how they implement classroom activities. In order to get a real picture about the current situation of the implementation of English classroom activities in senior high schools, the writer did some investigations in practice, school-Yingkou second senior high school on this subject. Firstly, the writer did some class observations in order to find out the kinds of class activities teachers like to carry out and their ways to implement the activities. Secondly, the writer issued questionnaires for the students and teachers to find out their opinions about classroom activities. In addition, the writer did some interviews for the teachers and students. By using the face-to-face communicative way, the writer further realized the teachers and the students’views on implementing classroom activities and the existing problems.There are three research questions for this survey:1. What is the current situation of implementing English activities at senior high schools?2. What do the teachers and students at senior high schools think of the classroom activities?3. What are the major problems in the implementation of classroom activities in English teaching? By means of classroom observation and questionnaire as well as interview for the teachers, the data and some information are collected, the author knew about the current situation of implementation of classroom activities and the views of teachers and students. Based on those, the findings of this study are showed:some teachers don’ ts design and apply classroom activities much. Finally, this paper based on the findings, comes up with some suggestions:the first one is authorities of educational institutes should encourage teachers to break with examination-oriented teaching design. The second one is authorities of educational institutes should provide more training for teachers. Teachers should try their best to make the classroom activities effective.
