In recent years, China's higher education has been advocating graduate student's innovation ability training, but the level and the effect of the implementation, was still far from reaching the desired objectives. American higher education is admiring to the world, especially its postgraduate education has developed the world's most innovative ability of senior personnel, and provided innovative talents reserves for the prosperity of the United States. Therefore, we researched American postgraduate education from the innovation ability training path, which had the important meaning for promoting China's postgraduate education research and guiding our graduate students'innovative ability development.We researched the American graduate student education by using literature research, comparative research and historical research methods. We discovered that the United States built culture atmosphere for the postgraduate student innovation ability training through the construction of academic environment university campus and system environment. The colleges and universities laid foundation of knowledge for the graduate student innovation ability training, by building the interdisciplinary course system, using a variety of teaching way and with the multiple studies the inspection way. The colleges and universities trained postgraduate innovation ability through the development of scientific research project, the teaching practice and the social service activities. We learned from the advanced experience of graduate student training, and put forward specific countermeasures and suggestions in combination with the problems of China's graduate education.
