Since reform and open up to the outside world, the industrialization and economy has developed fast.But growth with high level of input,consumption and discharge while low level of coordination,circulation and efficiency causes many environmental problems. The environment gradually becomes one of the important restrictions of economic development. The western environment isBecause the environment in western china worsens seriously and it is very important to the whole country,China takes the environment conservation and the ecological building as the bases of the western development.The western develop-ment promotes the economic development effectively,then if the ecological environ-ment is protected effectively. If the environment is not coordinated with the economic growth, then the resources may be exhausted and the economy will not develop.Therefore, it is essential especially to study on the relationship between environmental pollution and economic development in western china.1. The study perspective of this dissertationThis article establishes EKC models separately for the periods from 1991 to 1999 and from 2000 to 2009 to contrast and analyse their relationship between environmental pollution and economic development.We can analyse whether the environmental policy is effective according to the empirical result.And then we establish the extend type of EKC model to analyze the effect of population size, industrial structure, international trade on the environment,2. The main structure of this dissertationThis paper is divided into six chapters:Chapter 1, Introduction section. In the first, it introduces the background of this dissertation; Secondly, it enunciates the purpose and significance of the research dissertation.thirdly, it outlines research methods, major contents and basic structures of this dissertation. Chapter 2, the related literature review inside and abroad.This chapter sums up and review the related literature about EKC, which providing provide theoretic reference and instrutional methods.Chapter 3, Analyze the environmental pollution and economic development of 12 western provinces from 1991 to 2009 with descriptive statistics.Chapter 4, Empirical analysis based on simple EKC models. This chapter establishes EKC models separately for the periods from 1991 to 1999 and from 2000 to 2009 to contrast and analyse their relationship between environmental pollution and economic development.We can analyse whether the environmental policy is effective according to the empirical result.Chapter 5, Analysis on the cause of EKC. This chapter establishes the extend EKC modesl to analyze the effect of population size, industrial structure, international trade on the environment.Chapter 6, Conclusions and Further research.3. The main conclusions of this dissertation(1)The relationship between environmental pollution and economic develo-pment is different. The shape of the EKC is decided mainly by environment indicators or the sample data.(2) Only a few environment indicators conform to the EKC hypothesis.(3) Since the development of western regions, the pollution of most environ-ment indicators rises first and drops later along with the economic development.(4) The effect of west development on the the relationship between environm-ental pollution and economic development is different by regions and environment indicators.(5) Population size, industrial structure, international trade have siginificant effect on the environment, but the effect is different by regions and environment indicators.4. The features of this dissertation(1) Analyse on the relationship between five environment indicators and economic development separately.(2) Contrast Analysis on the relationship between environment pollution and economic development in 12 western provinces. (3) This paper establishes EKC models separately for the periods from 1991 to 1999 and from 2000 to 2009 to contrast and analyse their relationship between environmental pollution and economic development.
